The book Teaching Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Activities for the Classroom, published by Edward Elgar Publishing and co-edited by Raquel da Silva, researcher at CEI-Iscte, and Alice Martini, is now available.
The book brings together practical, classroom-tested activities for teaching terrorism and counter-terrorism, proposing critical approaches that encourage students to question assumptions, dominant narratives and established ways of understanding these phenomena. Organised into four parts — collaborative and student-led pedagogies; creative and visual methods; simulations and experiential learning; and context, language and narrative analysis — the book presents proposals that include case studies, visual and creative methods, simulations, video games and activities utilising artificial intelligence.
As well as co-editing the book, Raquel da Silva has also contributed as an author to several of its sections, offering insights into different ways of teaching terrorism and security. Her contributions include chapters exploring the use of creative and visual tools and pedagogical approaches to foster a critical understanding of terrorism and counter-terrorism.
In a context characterised by the growing use of artificial intelligence and the digitalisation of education, the book argues for the importance of considering not only the tools used, but above all the pedagogical choices that guide their use.
