Between 29 June and 3 July, Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon hosted one internship of the 2026 edition of the Ciência Viva Summer Internship, which this year focused on the theme ‘Social Sciences and Technology in Solving the Challenges of the Future’. Over the course of a week, a group of high school students had the opportunity to engage with the interdisciplinary research carried out at the institution, exploring how the combination of technology and the social sciences can address contemporary issues.

CEI-Iscte was present by organising the session ‘Reflections on Ethics and Healthy Lifestyles’. Led by researchers Marcelo Moriconi and Inês Ascenso, the session challenged participants to explore crucial issues regarding the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and the values that guide our coexistence in society, particularly in the context of online gaming.

Through direct contact with ongoing research projects, the students participated in lively discussions and collaborative activities. As well as developing their critical thinking skills and gaining an understanding of the impact of science on our understanding of behaviour and lifestyles, they also had the opportunity to learn about and try out some of the data collection and analysis techniques used on a daily basis by CEI researchers.

In addition to the strong focus on social sciences and international relations provided by the CEI, the activities involved collaboration with other research units at Iscte. Participants were able to explore topics ranging from the Internet of Things (IoT) with ISTAR, through neuroscience and psychology with the CIS (via LAPSO and the Monopolis game), to digital manufacturing and youth employment with DINÂMIA’CET, digital agriculture with IT, science communication via podcasts with CIES, and Nature-Based Solutions promoted by BRU.
