On 25 June, CEI-Iscte organised the workshop ‘Kurakani [Conversations] and meaning-making about (in)security with the Nepali community in Portugal’. The event marked the end of Professor Priya Dixit research visit to Iscte’s Centre for International Studies, hosted under the FCT Mobility programme of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Led by Priya Dixit in collaboration with Raquel Beleza da Silva, a researcher at CEI-Iscte, the workshop presented the findings of a research project focusing on public safety and the experiences of the Nepalese community in Portugal.
Drawing on participant observation and interviews conducted in small businesses owned by Nepalese people across five regions of the country, the study analysed: the impact of policing, and how policing practices affect migrant and minority communities in multicultural democracies; and the construction of meaning, and how members of this community interpret and make sense of their own daily experiences of security and insecurity.
