CEI-IUL will receive Dr Hugo Meijer as a guest speaker for the opening conference of the 2018/19 edition of the Master in International Studies.

Dr Meijer’s lecture, intitled: “The Past, Present and Future of European Defense: Between Defense Integration and National Transformation” will take place on October 2nd at 6 p.m. in auditorium B2.04 (Building 2, ISCTE-IUL). Free entry.

About the lecturer:

Dr Hugo Meijer is Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the European University Institute (EUI, Florence), Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Starting in early 2019, he will be Research Fellow (CNRS) at the Centre for International Studies of Sciences Po (Paris). He is also the founding director of The European Initiative on Security Studies (EISS), a network of over eighty universities that share the goal of consolidating security studies in Europe. Previously, he was Lecturer in Defence Studies at King’s College London (2013-2016) and a Researcher at the Institute for Strategic Research (IRSEM, Paris, 2016-2017).

He received his PhD in International Relations from Sciences Po in 2013 (summa cum laude). His research interests lie at the intersection of foreign policy analysis and security studies. He currently focuses on the reconfiguration of US hegemony in the face of a rising China and on its implications for American alliances in Europe and Asia. In particular, he is working on a two-pronged research project that examines the evolution of US posture and alliances in East Asia and of Western foreign and defence policies.

Recent publications: The Handbook of European Defence Policies and Armed Forces (Oxford University Press, 2018), co-edited with Marco Wyss; Trading with the Enemy: The Making of US Export Control Policy toward the People’s Republic of China (Oxford University Press, 2016); Origins and Evolution of the US Rebalance toward Asia: Diplomatic, Military, and Economic Dimensions (ed.) (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). He has also published in such journals as the Cooperation and Conflict, Journal of Strategic Studies, European Journal of International Security and the Journal of Cold War Studies. Hugo is French and Dutch, and was born and raised in Italy.
