AfDevLives creative methodologies event series: Photography Against the Grain: Observation, Engagement and Documentation The architect and photographer, Gili Merin, invites us in her ongoing exploration of the history of urban photography, visual travelogues and photo essays in order to formulate a critique of the ways images have been produced and consumed over the last century. The lecture will also include an overview of Gili’s research photographic projects that offer tools for critical observation, engagement and documentation of the built landscape.Gili Merin (PhD) is an architect and photographer based in Vienna. Formerly a Diploma Unit Master at the AA and head of History and Theory at the RCA, she is currently an assistant professor at the TU Vienna where she researches the politics of landscape. She is the author of the forthcoming photographic travelouge Analogous Jerusalem (Humboldt Books, 2024).
