Joana Roque de Pinho, a researcher at the CEI-Iscte, is guest editor of the special issue ‘Pastoralists and COVID-19: An Introduction’, published in the academic journal Nomadic Peoples, by Liverpool University Press (LUP). The issue brings together academic contributions on the experiences of pastoralist communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and includes two articles authored by the researcher.

Co-edited in collaboration with Angela Kronenburg García and Annemiek Pas Schrijver, this special issue analyses the experiences of pastoralist communities during the pandemic, highlighting the challenges faced, local response strategies, and forms of resilience and collective organisation in the face of a global crisis.

The researcher has co-authored, with Angela Kronenburg García, Stanley ole Neboo, Lenaai ole Mowuo and Matinkoi ole Mowuo, the article “Seeking Health and Finding Collective Joy under Lockdown: The COVID-19 Meat Camp among Maasai of Southern Kenya”. The study focuses on the experiences of Maasai communities in southern Kenya during lockdown, exploring local responses to the pandemic and the importance of collective practices for well-being and community life.

The special issue also includes case studies on pastoralism in Italy, Spain, Kenya, Benin and Mongolia, providing a comparative perspective on the diverse impacts of the pandemic and the responses developed by different pastoralist communities.

The special issue is available here.
