The LPAZ Forum announces its sixth edition with the International Conference “Atlantic Bridges: Culture, Politics and Knowledge”, to be held from September 1st to 3rd, 2025, on the island of Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal.

Bridging the Atlantic has been one of the most significant undertakings over the last six centuries, with global implications. This conference seeks to explore how culture, politics, and knowledge have been interlinked over time across the Atlantic, and how these processes continue to shape our views of this oceanic region.

Organization and Support
The conference is organized by the LPAZ Association, in collaboration with various academic and cultural institutions, including the Center for International Studies of Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, the Center for Humanistic Studies of the University of the Azores, among others. It is supported by the Regional Government of the Azores, the Municipality of Vila do Porto, and the FLAD – Luso-American Development Foundation.

Conference Topics
The conference welcomes contributions that examine the Atlantic from a holistic and transdisciplinary perspective. Some of the key topics include:

  1. Azores and Atlantic geopolitics;
  2. Atlantic Kinetics: transport, communications, and connectivity (in memory of Alan Dobson);
  3. Atlantic diasporas;
  4. Environment and climate change;
  5. History of Science in the Atlantic;
  6. Island Studies, Island Literature, and representations of the Atlantic;
  7. Atlantic Politics, State, Autonomy, and Integration;
  8. Geocritical and geopoetic approaches to the Literary Atlantic;
  9. The Atlantic in literature, the media, and other arts.

Call for Papers
We invite scholars from various fields, including History, Political Science, International Relations, Literature, Sociology, Economics, and Technology, to submit paper proposals. Each proposal should include a 300-word abstract and a 100-word author biography.
