6th International Conference on Social and Solidarity Economy and the Commons
Hacking Our Common Future
Transnational cooperation between community-led initiatives in a fragmented world
4–6 November 2026 | Iscte, Lisbon
Connecting research, communities and sustainable futures
How can community-led initiatives help shape more sustainable and equitable futures in an increasingly fragmented world?
From 4 to 6 November, CEI-Iscte hosts the 6th International Conference on Social and Solidarity Economy and the Commons, bringing together researchers, practitioners and community-led initiatives to explore new forms of cooperation, collective action and social transformation.
For CEI-Iscte and its Sustainable Societies Research Group, this conference provides an important space to engage with questions at the heart of research on socio-environmental change: how communities organise collective responses, how institutions and economic systems can be transformed, and how relationships between society, nature and technology can contribute to sustainable futures.
Building on the previous edition’s focus on Collapse and Regeneration, this year’s theme, Hacking Our Common Future, shifts the discussion towards the collective experimentation and transnational cooperation through which communities can reimagine existing structures and develop alternatives grounded in shared responsibility and the commons.
Why this conversation matters
The conference connects international research with situated knowledge and practical experiences, creating opportunities to exchange perspectives on:
- Transnational cooperation and federated commons.
- Digital infrastructures and technologies for collective action.
- New economic practices and community-led alternatives.
- Ecological responsibility, territories and post-carbon transitions.
- Knowledge-sharing, cultural practices and participatory research.
By bringing these conversations together, the conference reinforces the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue and international collaboration in understanding and addressing contemporary social and environmental challenges.
