Joana invites us to walk and listen to places, to their temporal layers and ingrained entanglements. The workshop will concentrate on walking and listening as forms of place-based research and practice that will allow us to engage with concrete sites and to read traces of multiple, often conflicting, temporal layers engraved in them. On the first day, we will experiment with different audio walks and the distinct ways they affect and expand our nomadic experience of the places they cross. On the second day, after a public lecture by Joana, we will immerse ourselves in embodied research, experimenting with ways of listening to a specific path along Marvila and Beato, a complex and heterogeneous territory where remains of industrial and rural pasts coexist with scattered neighbourhoods separated by fast lanes and more recent interventions resulting from land and property pressures. Based on embodied and aural experience, participants, organised in groups, will outline an audio walk aiming to expand the experience and understanding of the materialities, temporalities, uses, affections and contradictions of this territory.

experience of space and its cultural, political and social dimensions. She has experimented with research formats that articulate the embodied experience of the territory with the collection and reconfiguration of memories, traces and issues that cross it, to problematize specific places and territories, as well as the discourses, objects and practices that unfold them. She has explored walking as an experimental and artistic practice to critically rethink
inhabited space and the relationship we establish with it. Her work has been multifaceted, comprising artistic practice, research, curating and writing.
