Between June 4 and 6, Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon hosted the Second Annual Conference of the Military History Consortium (MHC), an international initiative dedicated to the study of military history and military organisations, from antiquity to the present day. The event was organised in partnership with CEI-Iscte, as an institutional member of the consortium.
The Military History Consortium is led by Lancaster University, which hosted the inaugural conference in 2024, and includes institutions such as the University of Amsterdam, University of Calgary, Félix Houphouët-Boigny University (Abidjan), Norwich University, Sapienza University of Rome, Sciences Po Aix and Stellenbosch University, in addition to CEI-Iscte.
This year’s conference brought together researchers from all the member institutions, as well as from various international universities, promoting the sharing of research on the history of war and military institutions in different eras and geographies.
The highlight of the conference was the keynote lecture by Professor Richard Reid (University of Oxford), entitled “Isike’s Road: An African revolution in five acts”, which brought a profound reflection on African experiences of conflict and resistance.
The next edition of the conference is already scheduled for 3-5 June 2026 in Aix-en-Provence.
