The LPAZ Association, in partnership with the Centre for International Studies of the Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon (CEI-Iscte), the Centre for Humanistic Studies of the University of the Azores (CEHu), CHAM-Açores, the Atlantic Centre, and the Transatlantic Studies Association, is organising the LPAZ Forum 2024 – One Atlantic, Many Perspectives. The event, whose theme will be ‘Valuing Diversity in the Age of Competition | Un Atlantique à Perspectives Multiples – Respect de la Diversité à l’ère de la Compétition’, will take place on 5, 6 and 7 September on the island of Santa Maria, Azores. This will be the fifth edition of the Forum, following the 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2023 editions.

The LPAZ Forum 2024 will bring together around 30 participants to discuss Atlantic issues in a comprehensive way, exploring everything from Literature to Geopolitics, and from Oceanography and Climate to Space Technologies. The event includes two days of conferences and a Geostrategic Route around the island of Santa Maria, visiting sites of relevant geostrategic value throughout history.

On the first day, the forum will feature a special panel dedicated to NATO, celebrating the organisation’s 75th anniversary, and the role of Portugal and the Azores within it. The Secretary of State for National Defence, Professor Ana Isabel Xavier, will speak at the end of the day.

The 6th of September, at the Vila do Porto Municipal Library, will be reserved for various discussion sessions on topics such as the Diaspora and International Relations. The day will conclude with a lecture by Professor Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida, entitled ‘Azores – Place of Passage? Meeting place? A place of departure? Or pole between poles?’.

In addition, the Forum will present the launch of the book ‘The Azores, the Atlantic, and the Global Challenges – Geopolitics and Diaspora’, coordinated by Dulce Maria Scott, Diniz Borges, Ana Mónica Fonseca, and António Monteiro, and published by Bruma Publications, of Letras Lavadas. This book, which is the result of the communications from the 2023 edition of the Forum, will be launched on Friday at 9.30pm at the Blues Bar in Lugar dos Anjos.

The LPAZ 2024 Forum is organised in collaboration with various academic institutions and has the support of the Regional Government of the Azores, Vila do Porto City Council, the Portuguese Space Agency and FLAD – the Luso-American Development Foundation.
