Curso de verão | O Médio Oriente na Política Mundial

Encontram-se abertas as candidaturas para o curso de verão “O Médio Oriente na Política Mundial”. O curso decorrerá entre 28 de agosto e 1 de setembro e será coordenado pelo investigadores Arshin Adib-Moghaddam (SOAS, London), Giulia Danielle (CEI-IUL) e Bruno Cardoso Reis (CEI-IUL). Terá uma duração de 20 horas, decorrendo de segunda a sexta-feira em horário pós-laboral, entre as 14:30 e as 19:00 horas. A organização está a cargo do Centro de Estudos Internacionais (CEI-IUL) e do Instituto para as Políticas Públicas e Sociais (IPPS-IUL), do ISCTE-IUL. O curso é direcionado a estudantes universitários, diplomatas, militares, profissionais ligados a temáticas sobre as relações internacionais no Médio Oriente.

Este curso oferece uma introdução à política internacional do chamado Médio Oriente, fazendo a ponte entre o estudo das relações internacionais e o estudo da política transnacional (e.g. o pan-Arabismo, pan-Islamismo), dos conflitos inter-estatais (e.g. as guerras do Golfo, o conflito em Israel/Palestina), da política externa dos grandes Estados (Irão, Turquia, Iraque) e da política das superpotências para com a região. O curso investiga tanto os fatores envolvidos na condução da política internacional dentro desta região, bem como o método e os conceitos para os compreender. Para esse fim, o curso introduz o discurso de “Orientalismo”, as teorias de relações internacionais, como o (neo)realismo e o construtivismo social, bem como outras abordagens relevantes para uma investigação detalhada sobre as interações complexas na região.

The Middle East in World Politics

Applications are open for the summer course “The Middle East in World Politics”. The course will be held between August 28 and September 1 and will be coordinated by Arshin Adib-Moghaddam (SOAS, London), Giulia Danielle (CEI-IUL) and Bruno Cardoso Reis (CEI-IUL). It will have duration of 20 hours, running from Monday to Friday between 2:30pm and 7:00pm. The course is organised by the Center for International Studies (CEI-IUL) and the Institute for Public and Social Policies of ISCTE-IUL and is aimed at university students, diplomats, the military, and professionals involved in Middle East affairs.

This interdisciplinary course provides an introduction to the international politics of the Middle East. It combines the study of international relations with the understanding of transnational politics (e.g. pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism), inter-state conflict (e.g. the Persian Gulf Wars, the conflict in Israel/Palestine etc.), foreign policy of major regional states (Iran, Turkey, Iraq etc.) and “superpower” politics. The course thus investigates both the factors involved in the making of international politics in the area, and the methods and concepts used to understand them. To that end, it introduces students to the discourse of “Orientalism”, theories of international relations such as (neo)realism and social constructivism and other approaches that are relevant to an in-depth enquiry into the complex interactions within the region.
