Detalhes do evento

The LPAZ FORUM 2017 will be an event which aims to debate the role of aviation in changing the notions of time and space and the effects of these changes in the territories and in the culture. It will be a triptych event featuring the international academic Conference “Aviation: the impact on Time and Space”, a Workshop of aviation museums and archives operating in the North Atlantic basin, and the presentation of the documentary film Little America. It will be held from September 6th to 10th, 2017, at the Municipal Library of Vila do Porto, on Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal.

The event is promoted by the LPAZ Association, in collaboration with academic institutions such as the University of the Azores, the Center for International Studies of the ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, and the Portuguese Association for French Studies (APEF). It will also have the support and participation of other private and public institutions interested in collaborating with it and operational in this matter.

The international academic Conference “Aviation: The Impact on Time and Space”, will gather experts of the social sciences in the discussion over the contributions and the effects of aviation on the notions of time and space. It will feature two days of conferences and talks in several thematic panels following the Call for Papers below.

The Workshop of Aeronautical Museums and Archives will feature the presentation of the installation experiences and interaction options with the targeted audience of several museological and archival institutions in the Atlantic basin and who share the same history as the Azores, in the context of aviation geopolitics. The main goals of this workshop are: to understand the challenges faced and the solutions adopted by some of the existing North Atlantic aviation museums and archives, as a contribution to the museal options to be implemented in the Azores; to share information that may help to extend the geographical space of an eventual aeronautical museum network and its potential thematic crossings; increase the perception of historical, cultural and social contexts that may define, delimit and condition musealization projects and/or aeronautical heritage preservation in the Azores and in the North Atlantic.

The documentary film Little America has been developed by its Director Marc Weymuller, since 2012. It addresses the memory of citizens regarding how the installation of an aeronautical infrastructure affected their everyday lives. It will be a fundamental document for perceiving the evolution of Santa Maria society in the 20th century – a tangible example of how aviation, by changing time and space, also hugely modified the experience of a community.

Aviation has changed the perception of time and space; the notion of distance, isolation, belonging and otherness, functioning as a time accelerator and pulling shores closer. The way how the different territories were able to contribute for the development of aviation and tightness of the Atlantic communities, as well as its historical recurrence, urge for a reflection about the experience of each community and the resulting effects of the closeness effects. These issues are as important for insular spaces – Azores and Portugal – as it is for all the Atlantic community which, although sharing the same cultural values, is spread apart by the Atlantic River. With this event, one intends to contribute to a local, national and Atlantic reflection over aviation’s impact on time and space, on culture and the territories. By sharing knowledge and experiences that emerge from the participation in this grand space and time speeding activity, which is aviation, the Forum LPAZ 2017 aims to make it possible for the several communities to interpret and value themselves, affirming the aeronautical history and heritage of the North Atlantic.
