Biographical Information

PhD Stephan Dünnwald studied Social Anthropology, Sociology, Geography and History of Arts at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He finished his studies with a PhD in Sociology from the Universität Augsburg in 2004. Throughout his studies, he focused on the topics of ethnicity, social conflict, migration, and refugees. Since 1992, he has been providing advocacy, as well as social and legal support for refugees. He has been working at the free radio Lora München since 1996, and soon thereafter became a chief producer in the field of (forced) migration and multicultural society. He has been executive manager of the Bavarian Council for Refugees from 2002 to 2008. He conducted several research projects in Central Europe and Mali, West Africa. In 2008, he finished a project on the return and reintegration assistance of refugees to Kosovo. Since March 2009, Stephan Dünnwald works at the Centro de Estudos InternacionaisInstituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-IUL), on the basis of a post-doctoral grant obtained by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). His research concentrates on migration and its effects on countries of origin in West Africa.
