Biographical Information

Jason Keith Fernandes is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centro de Estudos Internacionais – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-IUL). He was recently awarded a doctorate in anthropology for a dissertation on The Citizenship Experiences of Goan Catholics. His current research project Crafting Good Citizens: The Politics of Crafting Indian Citizens from Catholics in Goa will explore the manner in which two historical moments in the 1960s, the outcome of the Vatican Council II and the integration of Goa into the Indian Union have impacted on the practices of Catholicism in Goa. Both these works seek to explore the dynamics of citizenship experiences of minoritized groups in the Indian state. In addition to interests in politics in the margins of the subcontinent, he is also interested in articulating a postcolonial theory that is cognizant of the experiences outside of Anglophone and Northern European worlds. Jason has regular op-ed columns in a number of newspapers in Goa and his popular writings are archived at
