AEGIS has established a fund of to assist colleagues coming from African countries who may experience difficulties financing their participation in the forthcoming European Conference of African Studies in Lisbon. There are a limited number of awards of €1,000 each which will be made available to the most deserving candidates.

Manner of Application Submission

Applications must reach us before midnight GMT of April 1. They have to be sent via email to the Steering Committee of ECAS 2013, Centre of African Studies ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, clearly marking ‘AEGIS Travel Application‘ in the subject of the message. The e-mail address is

Applications must include:

  • the candidate’s name (with gender and age);
  • his/her institution;
  • the number of the panel in which his/her paper has been accepted;
  • a short CV (2 pages max)
  • two letters of recommendation from someone who knows his/her work well. One may be the panel convenor where appropriate.

Other Information

AEGIS board members will act as the scientific committee to analyse and list applications.

Results will be sent to the candidates and will be published on the ECAS site.

The successful candidates must accept the terms of AEGIS funding procedures. This means that candidates will have to book their own travel and accommodation, pay for the visa application and conference registration fee. They can only be reimbursed at the conference on delivery of the relevant receipts for each of these items. The maximum award is €1,000 and AEGIS cannot be responsible for any overspend. 

The successful candidates must inform us of their acceptance, within 5 working days.
