Biographical Information

Major Raul General Raul Cunha entered the Portuguese Military Academy in 1972 and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Military Sciences. He attended the PO Army Infantry Officer Advanced Course in 1980/81, went through the Command and General Staff Course in 1987/88, and in 1990/91 attended the Senior Staff Course. He graduated from the Promotion to General Officer Course in 2004/05. Additional education includes a variety of professional courses. Major General Cunha has focused his career within the Army’s Special Forces, and was also a teacher at the Staff College. In 1991/93, he served in the European Community Monitoring Mission in Yugoslavia (ECMM-YU) as Chief of Operations at the Zagreb Regional Center. In 1995 he served abroad in the area of the European Forces, first at the Euro Corps and afterwards at EUROFOR in Florence. In Portugal he was the Equipment Branch Chief at the Portuguese Army Staff. In 2000, he was assigned to KFOR as Chief Training Division. Then he commanded the 15 Infantry Regiment and was afterwards appointed as Chief of Staff of the NATO Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Center. From 2005 to 2009, as a Major General, he was the Chief Military Liaison Officer of UNMIK and Military Adviser to the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Kosovo. Back in Portugal he commanded the Rapid Reaction Force of the Portuguese Army until his retirement in May 2011. He is presently assigned as a Military Judge in the Porto Court of Appeals.
