Clara Carvalho (Editor-in-Chief) – Clara Carvalho (PhD Anthropology, ISCTE, 1999) is an Associate Professor at Iscte-IUL. She was President of AEGIS (European Association of African Studies) (2015-2019) and director of the Centre of African Studies/ Centre of International Studies at ISCTE-IUL (2007-2016). As a Visiting Professor, she lectured at Brown University (US). She gave short courses at the universities of Lille (France), Rovira i Virgil (Spain), Mainz (Germany), Lomé (Togo), Libreville (Gabon), Cotonou (Benin), Amilcar Cabral (Guinea-Bissau), UP Maputo (Mozambique). She was a member and coordinator of evaluation commissions for FCT, A3ES, Leiden University, and on development policies for Camões IP and Gulbenkian Foundation. She was PI in seven projects with competitive funding. Her main research interests are Development and African Studies, and she has published on development policies, focusing on gender, health, and education. She is the editor of the journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos and director of the PhD program in African Studies.
Ana Lúcia Sá – Ph.D. in Sociology, is an associate researcher at the Centro de Estudos Internacionais at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-Iscte), after being a post-doctoral researcher at the Spanish National Research Council in Barcelona. She has worked extensively on the discourses of Angolan intellectual elites on the building of the nation in Angola and is now focusing on the discourses of social scientists and other intellectuals from Central Africa about the representations of the continent, the cultural diversity, and the decolonization of knowledge. Of particular significance in this regard is the study of the concept of land in African contexts. She is a member of the Spanish R&D project “Handling of cultural diversity and socio-political influence of transnational migration in two former Spanish colonies: Equatorial Guinea and Morocco” (Dir.: Yolanda Aixelà; HAR2011-22752). Moreover, she is also a member of the research network “Concept Africa” (University of Helsinki).
Augusto Nascimento – Researcher at Centro de História da Universidade de Lisboa. Nascimento finished his Bachelor’s degree in History in 1981. After that, he worked as a development worker in São Tomé e Príncipe until 1987. Back in Portugal, he obtained his master’s degree in 1992, and in 2000 his PhD in Sociology from the Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal). Was researcher at the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical in Lisbon, and collaborates with the Centro de Estudos Internacionais at the Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-Iscte), the Centro de Estudos Africanos da Universidade do Porto, and with the Instituto de História Contemporânea da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He published several articles about São Tomé e Príncipe and Cape Verde in national and international scientific journals. His main areas of interest are the recent history of Cape Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe.
Carlos Sangreman – (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5591-6882). Graduated in Economics from the Technical University of Lisbon, Ph.D. in African Studies at University ISCTE-IUL, Lisbon and till 2014 was Assistant professor at the University of Aveiro. International consultant in Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor and Sao Tome and Principe for UNDP, European Union, World Bank, International Organization for Migration and for the governments of Swiss, Sweden, Portugal, Cape Verde and Guinea – Bissau. Researcher at the Center for Studies on Africa and Development at the University of Lisbon responsible for current projects (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Carlos-Sangreman) “Memória de África e do Oriente ” (Portugal Africa Foundation), “Clusters of Development Cooperation in Mozambique, Timor, Angola and São Tomé” (Foundation for Science and Technology), “Dictionary of Cooperation” (CESA), “The Portuguese diaspora in Angola from 2002 to 2012” (Portugal Africa Foundation), Human Right Observatory in Guinea-Bissau (with local and Portuguese Human Rights NGO), Women Condition Observatory (with a NGO Guinean Miguilan), Human Rights Observatory for São Tomé e Principe. With the local NGO platform (FONG) and Portuguese NGO ACEP. Was Assistant of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation for the “Civil Society Forum for development cooperation” between 2008-2012 and general coordinator of the development cooperation of the University of Aveiro between 2004-2014.Over the years, he has acquired a deep knowledge of the Portuguese International Cooperation for Development and is currently coordinator of the distance course “Introduction to International Cooperation” taught at University of Aveiro in conjunction with the main institution for funding aid in Portugal Camões, ICL. Coordination of 12 surveys in Guinea-Bissau between 1986/87 and 2023 with a team of local inquirers. Consultant for Guinea-Bissau at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Portuguese School of Guinea-Bissau.
Edalina Sanches – Edalina Rodrigues Sanches is a Research Fellow at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa. Her research interests include democratisation, representation, party-citizen linkages, political behaviour, and constituency service, with a focus on Africa. Her research has been published in journals such as Party Politics, Forum for Development Studies, Journal of International Relations and Development, African Affairs, Journal of Contemporary African Studies, Parliamentary Affairs, Electoral Studies, Acta Politica, among others. His first book Party Systems in Young Democracies: Varieties of institutionalization in Sub-Saharan Africa (Routledge, 2018), is the result of her PhD thesis, which was awarded the Prize for Best PhD Thesis by the Portuguese Political Science Association (2016). She recently edited the book Popular Protest, Political Opportunities, and Change in Africa (Routledge, 2022); and currently leads a project funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Project HOME) which investigates parliamentary activity party-citizen linkages and constituency service in Africa.
Nuno de Fragoso Vidal – PhD in Political Studies, King’s College (London 2002), Researcher at the Lisbon University Institute – Centre for International Studies, PI of the research project “Pluralism: Democracy and Electoral Integrity in Angola and Mozambique” (www.pdeiam.com). Publications centered on democratization and development processes in Southern Africa, focus on Angola and Mozambique. Author of, between other works, African Modern Illiberal Democracies (Sá da Costa: 2024). International development strategies for the XXIst century and post-modern patrimonialism in Africa (RBPI, 61, 2019); The historical-sociological matrix and ethos at the heart and strength of MPLA’s modern Angola (TEMPO, 25, 2019); Angolan civil society activism since the 1990s (ROAPE, 42:143, 2015) and co-editor with Patrick Chabal of the book Angola: the weight of history (London: Hurst, 2009).
Vasco Martins – Vasco Martins is a researcher at the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra. His research work in African studies focuses on questions of citizenship and the politicization of historical memory in post-colonial and post-war contexts. He is the author of several articles on these themes published in the most visible journals in the field and the author of the book Colonialism Ethnicity and War in Angola (Routledge, 2021). He has participated in and organized various national and international events, including lectures and conferences, and has collaborated with various communication channels and the media. He is one of the editors of the journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos, and a member of the most relevant associations in the fields of Political Science, International Relations, and African Studies, both European and African. He has a degree in International Relations from the University of Minho, a master’s degree in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict from Birkbeck College, University of London, and a PhD in African Studies from ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, where he wrote a dissertation that received an Honorable Mention in the Contemporary History Prize awarded by the Mário Soares Foundation.
